CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Marissa

“Jacob’s alive.” Ben’s massive arms pulled me into a hug. “He’s alive!”

“Is he on his way home?” My voice muffled against his chest. “Have you talked to him?” I extracted myself from Ben’s crushing bear hug.

I turned to Liza. For the rest of my life, I will remember her face at this moment. Big fat crocodile tears slowly dripped from her lids, rolling over her cheeks and chin. She stood in the foyer like a deer caught in a hunter’s floodlight.

I returned my attention to Ben’s beet-red face. I laid my hand on his forearm and noticed a light sweat slicked his skin. His flushed face concerned me.

He should sit, but the only furniture in the foyer was a round antique entry table under a glittering crystal chandelier. No chairs. His blood pressure must’ve spiked. Liza would have her medical bag in her car.

“Jacob’s team is still behind enemy lines,” Ben said.

It took a moment for his words to register, then my heart stopped. Behind enemy lines? “I don’t understand. Why did the marines think he died if he’s still on a mission?” And why had the marines told Jacob’s parents his team was ambushed with no survivors?

“They have proof the team survived the attack.” Liza swiped at her tears with a crumpled tissue.

My heart soared, light and airy. Jacob was alive!

“Captain Jenkins said the military would do everything they could to find them.”

“Find them?” My soaring heart plummeted to the floor. For some reason, I turned to Mom.

She stood bug-eyed inside the door, her gaze sweeping between Ben and Liza.

Liza leaned into Ben and groaned a whimper that reached deep into my heart. “A group of Syrians is holding Jacob prisoner.”

“The entire team,” Ben added.

Blood rushed from my head at an alarming speed. I kept hold of Ben’s arm for balance.

“But my boy’s alive,” Ben repeated as if he needed to reassure himself his words were true.

It felt like a firecracker had exploded inside my chest, but I forced calm into my voice. “I don’t understand. What do you mean, find them ? If the army has proof, Jacob is alive…. Have they ordered a rescue?”

Of course, they had. Another RECON team would rescue Jacob. His team had conducted similar missions in the past. No man left behind, Jacob and his team did everything possible to live up to that promise.

Ben wrapped his beefy arm around Liza’s shoulders and guided us into the living room. “Come. Sit. I’ll tell you everything we know.”

Mom and I sat on either end of the sofa. Liza seemed to meld into one of the two recliners. Ben stood behind his wife, absently patting her arm.

“According to Captain Jenkins, a terrorist group holding Jacob’s team posted photos of the men on social media sites.” Ben’s voice sounded strong but held an understandable undercurrent of worry. He paused as if to push back tears, then continued, “The kidnappers posted the photos on sites frequented by military families. Captors use this common practice to flesh out a soldier’s name.
